STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: Van Vleck POWER SET Member Attends Lott Leadership Institute at Ole Miss

September 3, 2012

Van Vleck High School POWER SET member Tiera Williams spent her last summer of high school surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the country attending the Lott Leadership Institute at the University of Mississippi.

The senior was selected as one of only 50 nationwide accepted to participate in the special program designed to develop leadership skills in young students to prepare them for college. The program, named for former U.S. Senator Trent Lott, focuses on developing students to participate in state and national government.

As part of the program, Williams completed two college courses in Political Science and Speech Communication. In addition, the final week of the program was spent in Washington DC where participants met with Representative and Senators, industry and non-profit leaders, and were able to tour the historical sites. Williams favorite keepsake from her experience was the library card she received from the Library of Congress.

Williams was considering a degree in political science and then pursuing a career in public service. "Taking this political science class I thought that was what I wanted to major in, but now I'm really considering either medicine or law," Williams remarked. Regardless of the career path she takes, Williams is still interested in public service after establishing her career. "If I wanted to be a Representative or Speaker of the House, I learned that you want to have a good job and work your way up."
