STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: Kalvin Singletary

May 18, 2012
WIT member Kalvin Singletary was recently named to Texas Basketball Magazine All-State Team. Averaging 21 points and 14 rebounds a game, Kalvin was instrumental in helping the Leopards win the district championship. In addition to WIT and basketball, Kalvin is involved in band, cross country, and track. He qualified for the state track meet in shot put and discus as a sophomore and hopes to repeat that again this year. He is also involved in the community as the vice president of his church youth group and as a member of the United Way Youth Board.

Kalvin is the student advisor for WIT and hopes to pursue a career in physical therapy. "I love helping people," Kalvin says with a laugh. "I'll help others before taking care of myself because I like to see then happy." He concedes that he is considering other career choices since becoming involved in WIT. Recent visits to the control rooms at STP and Phillips 66 have him thinking about a career as an operator. "For me to choose a job, I have to see myself doing it all my life. I want to have a career, not just a job." When asked about his experiences in WIT Kalvin said, "At first I didn't know the impact science has on everything around us. WIT has taught me to value how important science is to our environment."

His favorite experiences with WIT have been the opportunities to interact with people from other countries and learn about nuclear power around the world. He cites the visits from the IAEA delegation last fall and the visit in February with students in the nucleargraduates program from the United Kingdom as highlights of his first year in WIT.

"The one thing I would say to people about joining WIT is to give everything a shot. You never know what you are going to get out of it."
