POWER SET Members Attend Civic Scientist Lecture at Rice University

April 16, 2012
On Thursday, April 12th, POWER SET members Katherine Cantu, Arianna Galvan, Lindsey Phillips, and Michelle Olmstead attended a lecture given by Dr. David Baltimore and Dr. Alice Huang at Rice University as part of the James A. Baker III Institute's Civic Scientist Lecture Series. POWER SET was graciously given VIP tickets to this event by the BioScience Research Collaborative after our visit there in January.

The lecture series focuses on "…talks by leading scientists and engineers from around the world who have impacted public policy. The goal of the series is to expose current and future scientists to the notion that their roles expand outside of the laboratory." Dr. Baltimore and Dr. Huang's lectures focused on the struggles of health research and U.S. relations with the "new Asia" in the fields of science and technology. After the lecture, these young ladies began educated conversations with one another about the impacts of a global society on the future of science and technology, as well as reflect and envision their own futures as women in the STEM fields.
