Palacios PS Visits Sabine Vaccine Institute and Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development

December 4, 2015
On December 1, 2015, Palacios POWER SET traveled to the Baylor College of Medicine's Sabine Vaccine Institute and Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development in Houston. Members were taken on a guided tour of the working vaccine lab to see researchers and doctors working on vaccines for neglected tropical diseases, such as leprosy and tick-born illnesses. They explained the processes that they go through of manipulating proteins at the microscopic level to prevent people from contracting these diseases. After the tour, a panel of researchers, scientists, PhD students, and research assistants held a discussion panel where they talked about their unique paths that led to their careers in this field, as well as offered advice to the young women, such as to study abroad and try new things. POWER SET would like to thank the Nuclear Power Institute, Dr. Valerie Segovia, the Director of Outreach for NPI, and Dr. Oluwatoyin A. Asojo of the National School of Tropical Medicine for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
