News from STP: POWER SET Students Visit Site, Simulator

February 6, 2012

Twenty-seven of the Bay City High School POWER SET students and three teachers came to take a tour on Thursday, Jan. 26 as part of the National Nuclear Science Week (Jan. 23 - 27). POWER SET, which stands for Powerful Opportunities for Women Eager and Ready for Science, Engineering and Technology, took a driving tour of the facility and got the opportunity for an in-depth presentation, given by John Hodges, in the Simulator. The students met with Women in Nuclear members Joanna DeLeon, Mary Anne Billings, Jean Franklin, Kathy Vandaalen and Sheila Davis.

POWER SET, sponsored by the Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) in cooperation with the local schools and the nuclear industry, was initially implemented at Palacios High School led by Valerie G. Segovia, Director of Outreach and Development, Nuclear Power Institute, to offer students learning tools and essential support to pursue educational and professional opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math. The program has broadened to now include the Bay City, Louise, Van Vleck and Sweeny high schools. South Texas Project WiN members support the Palacios program as mentors to students.
