IAEA Director General Amano Visits Texas A&M University

November 6, 2014

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano visited Texas A&M University 27-29 October 2014 where he met with university officials and toured on-campus facilities. Amano visited and received briefings from several departments including the Nuclear Engineering Department and the Nuclear Power Institute and the Nuclear Security Science and Policy Institute, which are operated by the Dwight Look College of Engineering and the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station.

"Texas A&M is known globally as a university having very high technology including in the area of nuclear science and technology," Amano said at a press conference Wednesday. "IAEA and A&M have cooperated for many years and that is why I am visiting the university to further increase cooperation."

The Nuclear Power Institute has been effectively working together with IAEA since 2009 to address key human resource development and outreach challenges. Dr. Kenneth Peddicord, the Director of the Nuclear Power Institute at Texas A&M University, said "We're very pleased, first of all, that he would come, and secondly that he would acknowledge the activities and the role of our Nuclear Power Institute working with the IAEA and fulfilling their mission."

Director General Amano's Texas A&M visit was co-coordinated by the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Nuclear Power Institute.
