Palacios POWER SET and Power GRID Afternoon of Engineering

On Tuesday, April 11th, Power GRID came to Palacios High School to participate in an Afternoon of Engineering. Members began the event by Skyping with Ms. Sarah Beasley, a 3rd year Computer Science major at Texas A&M - College Station. She spoke about how she came to love computer science, why she chose A&M, and what she wants to do with her degree, which is go into the defense field. Palacios POWER SET and Power GRID Build Bridges

On Friday, February 19th, Palacios POWER SET members and their mentees in Power GRID gathered at the Texas State Marine Education Center to participate in an engineering centered activity with the goal of building an aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound small-scale bridge out of a small amount of supplies, including popsicle sticks, straws, and tape. POWER SET has lunch with Power GRID at East Side and Visits Victoria College

On Wednesday, April 16th, POWER SET traveled to East Side to eat lunch with the Power GRID members. It has been a very successful and eventful year for Power GRID. Christmas in the Lab

Fifth graders in Jackie Ramsey's Cherry Elementary classes attended the Bay City High School "Christmas in the Lab" event on December 16, 2014. BCHS POWERSET and WIT students lead the elementary students through a rotation of labs set up in the BCHS science lab area. In one experiment the fifth graders made "slime," using borax, glue, water and dye in a chemical reaction. In another lab they made "gold pennies" by using heat, zinc, sodium hydroxide, and distilled water. A third lab had the students creating holiday ornaments. Visit to East Side for Lunch with Power GRID

On November 22, 2013, POWER SET members from Palacios High School traveled to East Side to have their first lunch with their Power GRID mentees. This was a very exciting day for both POWER SET and Power GRID because it was the first face to face meeting that the new mentors and mentees had with one another, as well as a welcomed reunion for the veteran mentors and mentees who have not seen each other as frequently due to summer. Van Vleck WIT and POWER SET Lend a Hand at the Coastal Expo

Van Vleck High School WIT and POWER SET members spent a day helping spark an interest in science in elementary students at the Coastal Expo on May 11. Over 500 elementary students participated in activities at Matagorda Bay Nature Park designed to teach them about Texas Coastal Ecosystems, why they are important, and how we can protect them. The event was sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). Van Vleck ISD Students Learn About Nuclear Power from Author

Although students in Van Vleck ISD know of friends and relatives who work at the South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company (STP), few of them really understand how electricity is generated at a nuclear power plant. However, after a visit by author Amelia Frahm, students got a glimpse of what goes on inside a nuclear power plant.
