Palacios POWER SET Attends STP Career Event and Visits Phillips 66 Corporate Office

May has been a busy month for the Palacios High School POWER SET group. On May 4th, members attended STP's Career Event where members from many of the local POWER SET and WIT groups were able to collaborate to build a Rubes Goldberg machine and then were given the opportunity to meet with STP employees from many different areas to discuss their careers. Palacios WIT students traveled to Wharton County Junior College in Bay City to tour their facility and to learn about the different types of programs that are available for students. WIT and BRT Build-A-Boat Competition

April 14, 2017

On Wednesday, April 12, 2017 Palacios High School WIT students met with their BRT mentees from East Side Intermediate to participate in the first Build-A-Boat competition. Students had to work together to design, fabricate and float their boats across the pool using different engineering concepts and keeping in mind buoyancy. The boats were built out of a limited supply of card board, duct tape, and pool noodles. Students had to race across the pool, keeping their boat afloat and trying to get the fastest time. On Tuesday, April 11th, Power GRID came to Palacios High School to participate in an Afternoon of Engineering. Christmas in the Lab

Bay City High School POWER SET and WIT hosted their mentees from Cherry Elementary Power GRID and BRT for an evening of fun and exploration with Christmas in the Lab. On Tuesday, March 15th, POWER SET traveled to the University of Houston to tour campus and participate in a cow eyeball dissection facilitated by PhD and graduate students. On January 22nd and 23rd, Palacios High School POWER SET members traveled to UTMB and Texas A&M in Galveston. On Friday, members were greeted by our guide, Alicia Simmons, and then toured the School of Nursing Simulation lab, run by Dr. Rachel Kilgore, and were even allowed to participate in simulations with their robotic patients. On Thursday, October 31st, PHS POWERSET traveled to STP to tour the facilities, learn about potential careers in the nuclear power field, and visit with their mentors. POWER SET Members Attend a Resume Writing and Interviewing Techniques Workshop at Sweeny Refinery

In October 2012, 140 high school students from area schools attended a Resume Writing and Interviewing Techniques workshop at the refinery. These young women learned how to prepare a professional resume, as well as how to prepare for a successful interview.
