Area science and math teachers, Colleen Knight (Bay City), Debra Setzer (Sweeny), and Heidi Elliott (El Campo), as well as college students, Elizabeth Castanon, Fred Mueller, and John Budd (Texas A&M University - Kingsville), electrified local students at a SOS (Science on Saturday) event that took place at the Center for Energy Development in Bay City on May 19. STP's Women in Nuclear hosted an end-of-year dinner for Palacios High School POWER SET (Powerful Opportunities for Women Eager and Ready for Science Engineering and Technology) members and their mentors on Thursday, May 24. STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: Palacios WIT Member Appointed to West Point

Christian Garcia, of Palacios High School WIT, was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is a senior, two-year member of WIT at Palacios High School. Garcia was nominated to the military academy by Congressman Ron Paul. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America and active in several sports, including track, football and baseball. STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: Kalvin Singletary

WIT member Kalvin Singletary was recently named to Texas Basketball Magazine All-State Team. Averaging 21 points and 14 rebounds a game, Kalvin was instrumental in helping the Leopards win the district championship. In addition to WIT and basketball, Kalvin is involved in band, cross country, and track. He qualified for the state track meet in shot put and discus as a sophomore and hopes to repeat that again this year.
