On Monday, October 15th, eight young ladies from Sweeny High School were inducted into POWER SET for the 2012-2013 school year. The keynote speaker for the ceremony was Ms. Jeannie Hale, a reliability engineer with Phillips 66. Ms. Hale shared aspects of her job and provided inspiration for POWER SET members to explore career opportunities in areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) including meteorology, geology, and medicine. On Monday, October 1st, 12 young ladies from Palacios High School were inducted into POWER SET for the 2012-2013 school year. The keynote speaker for the evening was Mrs. Debbie Morris, the Port Director for Matagorda County Navigation District #1, which oversees the Port of Palacios and is one of just a handful of women port managers in the nation. Along with the job of Port Director, Debbie is a County Investment Officer and is certified to manage the investment funds of the Navigation District. Czech Educators Visit Palacios and Van Vleck High Schools

Four educators from the Czech Republic recently got a taste of Texas hospitality while visiting Matagorda County. Secondary teacher Jitka Klusackova from the general high school in Trebic, and professors Karel Katovsky, Petr Mastny, and Jiri Martinec from Brno Technical University visited Palacios and Van Vleck High Schools as part of a bilateral agreement signed in September 2011 between the United States Department of Energy and the Czech Republic. Van Vleck High School POWER SET member Tiera Williams spent her last summer of high school surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the country attending the Lott Leadership Institute at the University of Mississippi. The senior was selected as one of only 50 nationwide accepted to participate in the special program designed to develop leadership skills in young students to prepare them for college. NRC Commissioner Bill Magwood Visits NPI

Commissioner William D. Magwood, IV from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission visited Texas A&M on August 3. The primary purpose of his visit was to address twenty-nine individuals from Kenya who were participating in a one-month workshop on nuclear energy organized by the A&M Nuclear Power Institute and sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Government of Kenya.
