The IAEA Nuclear Energy Management School

The Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) at Texas A&M University (TAMU) jointly with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted a three-week Nuclear Energy Management School (NEMS) for young professionals working in nuclear energy and related fields.

The purpose of this School was to provide a unique international educational experience aimed at building future leadership to manage and support nuclear energy programs and projects in nuclear energy field. It targeted professionals with managerial potential who show promise as future leaders in the nuclear industry, academia, government agencies and public sector entities in their country. The School allowed sharing and transfer of knowledge from internationally recognized experts in a wide range of activities critical to a sustainable nuclear energy program.

A special feature of NEMS at TAMU was a trip to Atlanta, Georgia to meet with representatives of the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) and visit the nuclear power plant construction site of Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4 in Waynesboro, Georgia.

Guest lecturers were representatives from the international nuclear community including experts from North American nuclear industry, the regulatory community, IAEA and Texas A&M University who shared their experiences in the management and operation of nuclear power plants in a post Fukushima era.

The School provided an opportunity for future nuclear leaders to build networks with nuclear established communities and with peers from other countries.

The School consisted of a series of keynote presentations and discussions on topics relevant to managing nuclear energy programs, case studies, practical sessions, group projects and visits to nuclear facilities. At the end of the school, all participants had to pass a final exam to receive a School certificate. The School was conducted in English.
